Sending a Kid to College? Don’t Skip Renters Insurance

By September 9, 2026No Comments

Sending a kid off to college comes with a pretty impressive checklist.

Tuition? Check.
Laptop? Check.
Mini fridge that will probably contain three energy drinks and half a pizza? Check.
Renters insurance?

…Wait, renters insurance?

It may not be the first thing that comes to mind, but if your college student is moving into an apartment, rental house, or even certain dorm situations, renters insurance is worth a look.

Their Stuff Adds Up Fast

College students may not think they own much, but start adding up the laptop, phone, TV, clothes, furniture, headphones, bike, gaming system, and everything else packed into that room.

Suddenly, replacing it all after a theft, fire, or other covered loss doesn’t sound so cheap.

Renters insurance can help protect those belongings without requiring a major monthly expense.

It’s More Than Just Their Stuff

One of the biggest benefits of renters insurance is liability coverage.

If your student accidentally damages the rental property or someone gets hurt and they’re found responsible, that coverage can help protect them from a much bigger financial headache.

Because college already comes with enough expensive surprises.

Don’t Just Assume They’re Covered

Some students living in dorms may have limited coverage through a parent’s homeowners policy, while students living off campus may need their own renters policy.

The important part is simply checking before move-in day.

And no, their roommate having renters insurance does not automatically mean your kid is covered too.

A Small Step Toward Adulting

Renters insurance is usually one of the more affordable types of insurance, and it’s a pretty easy way to add meaningful protection while your college student gets their first taste of managing life on their own.

Laundry skills may still be a work in progress.

At least the insurance part doesn’t have to be.
