Driving safely is no easy feat. If you’re a driver committed to starting alert, avoiding distractions, and following the rules of the road, we’re going to reward you for it. SmartRide, a usage-based insurance program, gives you personalized feedback to help you make even safer driving decisions. You’ll earn an instant discount when you sign up. The safer your driver, the higher the discounts you could get – up to 40%.
How SmartRide Works:
- After enrolling, download and activate the app.
- Check the app often to see your progress and track your discount.
- Most drivers earn their discount in 80 days.
- Once you earn your discount, you can improve it at every renewal, based on how safely you drive.
SmartRide measures 4 driving factors:
- Miles Driven
- Measures the number of miles driven during a trip. Statistics show that on average, the more miles driven, the higher the chances of an accident.
- Hard Braking
- Measures sudden decreases in speed.
- Fast Acceleration
- Measures sudden increases in speed.
- Nighttime Driving
- Measures driving between midnight and 5 a.m. Driving during certain times increases the chance of an accident.

- How much does it cost to use SmartRide?
- There is no cost to participate. Simply enroll, activate and drive.
- Can anyone try SmartRide?
- SmartRide is an optional program available to Nationwide members who have auto insurance.
- Can SmartRide increase my premium?
- No. This is a discount program. SmartRide measures driving behavior to reward you with a discount, not raise your rates.
- How often is my discount calculated?
- During the program, your estimated discount is updated weekly based on your driving behavior. Once your discount has been established, the opportunity for an increase is available at every policy renewal – up to 40% based on improvements in your driving behavior. Your discount will apply to all drivers insured who remain on your Nationwide Policy.
- How long is the program?
- The SmartRide program lasts for about 4 – 6 months.
- Can I participate in SmartRide using a plug-in device instead of the SmartRide app?
- The SmartRide app is the easiest way to participate in the SmartRide for most customers. However, we may recommend participating in SmartRide with a device if one of your vehicles was enrolled in one of our other usage-based insurance programs.
SmartRide program criteria differ in California and North Carolina. Stated discounts are approximations. Discounts do not apply to all coverage elements; actual savings vary by state, coverage selections, rating factors and policy changes. Enrollment discount applies during data collection; final discount is calculated on driving behavior and could be zero. Final discount applies at the next policy renewal and is subject to change based upon actuarial support at subsequent renewals or with changes in drivers or vehicles on the policy. In Virginia, the discount may decrease at renewal based on changes in driving behavior.
